Why Offsite PBS Backups?

A local Proxmox Backup Server protects against hardware failures — but not against site-wide disasters like fire, theft, or ransomware.

The 3-2-1 Rule

Keep 3 copies of your data, on 2 different media types, with 1 copy offsite. This is the industry standard for data protection.

Local PBS Isn't Enough

If your server room floods, burns, or gets crypto-locked, your local PBS goes down with it. Offsite backups are your insurance policy.

Our Solution

Sync your local PBS to our German data centers. Encrypted, deduplicated, and always available when you need to restore.

Offsite PBS Features at Homelab Prices

Everything you need for reliable offsite backups, without the enterprise price tag.

📦

Deduplication & Incremental

Only changed data blocks are transferred after the initial backup. Reduces storage by 60-80% compared to traditional backups.

🔐

Client-Side Encryption

AES-256 encryption happens on your PBS before data leaves your network. You control the keys — we never see your data.

🔄

Push & Pull Sync

Choose the sync direction that fits your network. Push from behind NAT, or let us pull from accessible servers.

📁

Namespace Support

Organize backups with PBS namespaces. Keep different projects, clients, or environments cleanly separated.

🌍

Geo-Replication

Optional replication to additional data centers for disaster recovery. Add replicas for €4/TB extra.

📊

Autoscaling Storage

Your datastore grows and shrinks with your actual usage. Pay only for what you use, billed hourly.

🔔

Real-Time Notifications

Email alerts for backup successes, failures, and quota warnings. Stay informed without checking dashboards.

📜

Detailed Logs

Full audit trail of all sync jobs, access events, and configuration changes in your dashboard.

🔑

VPN Access

Built-in WireGuard VPN for secure access without exposing PBS ports to the internet.

Set Up Offsite PBS Sync in 5 Minutes

Choose Push or Pull sync based on your network setup. Both methods provide the same security and efficiency.

Prerequisites

  • A running Proxmox Backup Server (local or remote)
  • A free account at remote-backups.com
  • Your PBS connection credentials from the dashboard (host, username, password)

Push mode: Your local PBS initiates the sync and pushes data to remote-backups.com. Best for most setups, especially if your PBS is behind NAT.

Step 1: Create the Remote Connection

Run this command on your local PBS server:

proxmox-backup-manager remote create remote-backups \
    --host YOUR_HOST.remote-backups.com \
    --userid YOUR_USERNAME@pbs \
    --password YOUR_PASSWORD

Step 2: Create a Sync Job

In your PBS web interface:

  1. Navigate to Datastore → Sync Jobs
  2. Click Add
  3. Select Direction: Push
  4. Choose the remote: remote-backups
  5. Set your preferred schedule (e.g., daily at 2 AM)
  6. Click Create
Tip: Enable "Remove vanished" to automatically clean up old backups on the remote that no longer exist locally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Proxmox Backup Server hosting

PBS hosting is a managed cloud service where we run Proxmox Backup Server infrastructure for you. Instead of maintaining your own offsite hardware, you sync your local PBS to our German data centers. You get all PBS features — deduplication, incremental backups, encryption — without the hardware costs or maintenance.

Create a sync job between your local PBS and a remote PBS target. Your local PBS pushes (or pulls) encrypted, deduplicated snapshots to the offsite destination over TLS. With remote-backups.com you get a managed offsite PBS target in a German data center — create an account, add the remote, and schedule a sync job. The whole setup takes about 5 minutes. See our step-by-step guide.

Create a free account, get your connection credentials from the dashboard, and add us as a remote in your local PBS. Then create a sync job to push or pull data. The whole process takes about 5 minutes. See our setup guide above for step-by-step instructions.

Push (recommended for most users): Your local PBS initiates connections and pushes data to us. Works great behind NAT and firewalls.

Pull: Our servers connect to your PBS and pull data. Requires your PBS to be reachable (via public IP or our WireGuard VPN). Useful for centralized management of multiple PBS instances.

Yes, with multiple layers: Client-side AES-256 encryption happens on your PBS before data is transmitted — you hold the keys and we never see your unencrypted data. TLS 1.3 protects data in transit. Data is also encrypted at rest in our data centers.

Yes! You can point your Proxmox VE directly at our PBS storage. This is simpler but means backups go straight to offsite without a local copy. For true 3-2-1 compliance, we recommend having a local PBS that syncs to us. See our Proxmox VE integration guide.

Your datastore can grow up to your configured limit (max 20TB). If you approach your limit, you'll receive email warnings. You can resize instantly from the dashboard — billing is prorated by the hour, so you only pay for what you actually use.

Initial backups depend on your data size and upload speed. After that, PBS deduplication means only changed blocks transfer — most daily syncs complete in minutes. Restore speeds depend on your download bandwidth. Our servers are connected via high-speed links in German data centers.

All data is stored in ISO 27001 certified data centers in Germany. Your data never leaves the European Union. We use our own colocated hardware — not generic cloud VMs — for reliability and performance.

Yes, PBS namespaces are fully supported. Organize backups by project, client, or environment. Namespaces sync correctly between your local PBS and our remote storage.

The main options are: 1) A second PBS at a remote location you manage yourself (colocation, friend's house, office). 2) A managed PBS hosting service like remote-backups.com where the infrastructure is handled for you. 3) PBS with S3 storage (tech preview in PBS 4.0). For most users, a managed offsite PBS target gives you the best balance of reliability, cost, and low maintenance.

You need a Proxmox Backup Server (local or remote) and an offsite target. Back up your VMs and containers from Proxmox VE to your local PBS, then create a sync job to replicate those backups offsite. The sync job transfers only changed data blocks, so daily syncs are fast after the initial seed. See our setup guide for a 5-minute walkthrough using push or pull sync.

Running your own offsite PBS requires: hardware purchase, colocation or hosting fees, maintenance, monitoring, and redundancy planning. With our managed hosting, you get all that handled for €8.50/TB/month. We handle the infrastructure — you just sync your backups.
