Until now, a bucket had a maximum bandwidth limit of 500 Mbit/s. That is enough for most nightly backups. But when the first full upload is several terabytes, or a restore must finish before the morning, 500 Mbit/s can be the bottleneck. Today, Buckets get a new speed tier: 1 Gbit/s. It is a paid add-on at the same rate as on datastores. The three lower tiers stay included in the storage price.
- Buckets now offer four speed tiers: 100, 250, 500 Mbit/s, and 1 Gbit/s.
- 100, 250, and 500 Mbit/s stay included in the storage price of €6/TB/month net.
- 1 Gbit/s costs €2 net per TB of bucket size per month. This is the same rate as the 1 Gbit/s tier on datastores.
- On subscription buckets, you can change the speed at any time in the bucket settings.
- On prepaid buckets, you select the speed at creation. It stays fixed for the life of the bucket.
What Changes
When you create a bucket, the dashboard now shows four speed options. The first three show "Included". The 1 Gbit/s option shows the extra cost for the bucket size you selected, for example "+€2.00/mo" for a 1 TB bucket. The price summary shows the 1 Gbit/s part as a separate line.
Existing buckets do not change. They keep their current speed and their current price. If you do nothing, your bill stays the same.
Pricing
The 1 Gbit/s tier costs €2 net per TB per month. The price follows the provisioned bucket size, the same as storage. It does not follow the bytes in the bucket or the traffic you send.
Some examples for subscription buckets with 1 Gbit/s (all prices net, excluding VAT):
- 1 TB bucket: €6 storage + €2 bandwidth = €8 per month.
- 5 TB bucket: €30 storage + €10 bandwidth = €40 per month.
On subscription buckets, we meter the add-on in full 100 GB blocks of the bucket size, at €0.20 per block. A 550 GB bucket has five full blocks, so the add-on is €1.00 per month. If you use autoscaling, the add-on follows the bucket size when the size changes.
On prepaid buckets, the add-on is part of the upfront price. The formula is bucket size in TB × €2 × the number of months. A 500 GB prepaid bucket for 3 months costs €9 for storage and €3 for 1 Gbit/s, so €12 in total. Renewals include the add-on too.
When 1 Gbit/s Is Worth It
The speed limit sets the maximum throughput between your systems and the bucket. These are approximate times for 1 TB at full line rate:
- 100 Mbit/s: about 22 hours
- 500 Mbit/s: about 4.5 hours
- 1 Gbit/s: about 2.2 hours
For your own data size and uplink, use the initial seed calculator.
Real throughput can be lower. It depends on your uplink, the latency to Frankfurt or Düsseldorf, and the settings of your tool. A single S3 connection seldom fills a fast link. With rclone, increase --transfers. With restic, increase -o s3.connections. Our restic and rclone guide shows the full setup.
1 Gbit/s is a good fit when:
The first upload is large. A full upload of several terabytes takes days at 100 Mbit/s. At 1 Gbit/s, it can finish in one night. On a subscription bucket, you can use 1 Gbit/s for the first upload and then go back to a lower tier. The charge stops when you set the lower speed.
Restores must be fast. A restore is often the moment when time matters most. If you must get data back within a fixed recovery time, a higher limit gives you more margin.
The backup window is short. If many systems write to the same bucket in a short nightly window, 500 Mbit/s can be too small.
If your daily changes are small and the first upload is done, an included tier is usually enough. restic and rclone send only new or changed data after the first run.
The bucket limit is a maximum. If your server has a 250 Mbit/s uplink, 1 Gbit/s on the bucket does not make the backup faster. Measure your uplink before you select the tier.
How to Turn It On
New bucket: In the dashboard, go to Buckets > Create Bucket. Select 1 Gbit/s in the speed options. The price summary shows the add-on before you order.
Existing subscription bucket: Open the bucket and go to Settings. Select 1 Gbit/s in the speed dropdown and save. The 1 Gbit/s option has a € mark. When 1 Gbit/s is selected, move the pointer over the € mark next to the speed. It shows the approximate monthly cost for your bucket size. To stop the add-on, select a lower speed again.
Prepaid bucket: The speed is fixed for the life of a prepaid bucket. To use 1 Gbit/s, create a new prepaid bucket with 1 Gbit/s and copy the data over, for example with rclone sync. See prepaid billing for how prepaid periods and renewals work.
Wrapping Up
Buckets now go up to 1 Gbit/s. The three lower tiers stay included, and the fast tier costs €2 net per TB per month, the same rate as on datastores. Use it for large first uploads, fast restores, or short backup windows, and turn it off again when you do not need it.
Create a bucket in Frankfurt or Düsseldorf and select 1 Gbit/s. The dashboard shows the full price before you order.
