Why Offsite Backups for Proxmox VE?

Local backups protect against drive failures — but not against site-wide disasters like fire, theft, or ransomware that encrypts your entire infrastructure.

The 3-2-1 Rule

Keep 3 copies of your data, on 2 different media types, with 1 copy offsite. This is the gold standard for data protection.

Local Storage Isn't Enough

If your server room floods, burns, or gets crypto-locked, local NAS and SAN storage goes down with it. Offsite backups are your insurance policy.

Native PVE Integration

No extra software needed. Add our PBS storage directly in your Proxmox VE interface and schedule backups via GUI or CLI.

How It Works

Connect your Proxmox VE directly to our cloud PBS storage. Your VMs and containers back up with native deduplication and encryption.

Set Up PVE Backups in 5 Minutes

Add remote-backups.com as a PBS storage target in your Proxmox VE and start backing up VMs and containers.

Prerequisites

  • Proxmox VE 7.x or 8.x
  • Network access to remote-backups.com (port 8007)
  • A free account at remote-backups.com with a datastore created
  • Your connection details from the dashboard: host, datastore name, username, password

Step 1: Add PBS Storage to Proxmox VE

  1. Log into your Proxmox VE web interface
  2. Navigate to Datacenter → Storage → Add → Proxmox Backup Server
  3. Enter your connection details:
    • ID: remote-backups (or any name you prefer)
    • Server: YOUR_HOST.remote-backups.com
    • Username: YOUR_USERNAME@pbs
    • Password: Your password from dashboard
    • Datastore: Your datastore name
  4. Optionally enable encryption and enter your encryption key
  5. Click Add

Step 2: Create a Backup Job

  1. Go to Datacenter → Backup → Add
  2. Configure your backup job:
    • Storage: Select remote-backups
    • Schedule: e.g., daily at 02:00
    • Selection mode: Include or exclude VMs/containers
    • Mode: Snapshot (recommended for live backups)
    • Compression: ZSTD (best balance of speed and ratio)
  3. Configure retention (keep-daily, keep-weekly, keep-monthly)
  4. Click Create
Tip: Test your first backup by selecting a small VM, right-clicking it, and choosing Backup. Watch the task log to confirm it completes successfully.

Restore Your VMs and Containers

Restore full VMs, individual files, or migrate between clusters — all from your Proxmox VE interface.

Full VM Restore

Right-click on a backup in the PBS storage view and select Restore. Choose the target node and VM ID.

The VM will be recreated with all disks, configuration, and state from the backup point.

File-Level Restore

Browse backup contents and download individual files without restoring the entire VM.

Navigate to the backup, click File Restore, and browse the filesystem to download what you need.

Cross-Cluster Migration

Restore backups to a different PVE cluster by adding the same remote-backups.com storage to the target cluster.

Perfect for disaster recovery or migrating VMs between environments.

VMs vs Containers: Both Fully Supported

Whether you run QEMU/KVM virtual machines or LXC containers, our PBS storage handles both with full deduplication.

Pro tip: PBS deduplication works across all VMs and containers, so identical data blocks are stored only once — even across different guests.

Why Offsite Beats Local-Only Backups

A local NAS or SAN is great for fast restores — but it can't protect against site-wide disasters.

Local-Only Backups
  • ⚠️ Same location as production
  • ⚠️ Vulnerable to fire, flood, theft
  • ⚠️ Ransomware can encrypt local backups
  • ⚠️ Hardware failure risk
  • ⚠️ No true disaster recovery
remote-backups.com
  • ✅ Geographically separate from your site
  • ✅ Protected against local disasters
  • ✅ Isolated from network-based attacks
  • ✅ Redundant enterprise infrastructure
  • ✅ True 3-2-1 disaster recovery

Best practice: Keep local backups for fast restores, and use remote-backups.com for disaster recovery. Or skip local entirely and back up directly to us if simplicity is your priority.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Proxmox VE cloud backups

Add remote-backups.com as a PBS storage target in your Proxmox VE web interface (Datacenter → Storage → Add → Proxmox Backup Server). Then create backup jobs that target this storage. Your VMs and containers will back up directly to our German data centers. See our setup guide above for step-by-step instructions.

No. You can back up your Proxmox VE directly to our cloud PBS storage without running your own PBS server. This is the simplest setup. However, if you want local + offsite backups (recommended for true 3-2-1), you can run a local PBS that syncs to us. See our PBS sync guide for that workflow.

Yes. Use snapshot mode in your backup job configuration. For best results with Windows VMs, install the QEMU guest agent to enable application-consistent snapshots. Linux VMs work well with snapshot mode out of the box.

The initial backup depends on your data size and upload bandwidth. For example, 100GB over a 100 Mbit/s connection takes roughly 2-3 hours. After the first backup, only changed blocks are transferred, making daily backups much faster — often completing in minutes.

Thanks to PBS deduplication, your backup storage is typically 40-60% smaller than your raw VM disk sizes. For example, 500GB of VMs might only need 200-300GB of backup storage. Start with our free 100GB tier to measure your actual usage.

Yes, fully. PBS uses content-defined chunking to identify changed blocks. After your initial full backup, subsequent backups only transfer chunks that have changed. This dramatically reduces backup time and bandwidth usage while maintaining full restore capability.

Yes. In the Proxmox VE interface, navigate to your backup, click File Restore, and browse the VM's filesystem. You can download individual files or directories without restoring the entire VM. This works for both Linux and Windows VMs.

Snapshot: Backs up running VMs with minimal impact — recommended for most cases.

Suspend: Pauses the VM briefly during backup for consistency, then resumes.

Stop: Shuts down the VM, backs up, then starts it again — most consistent but causes downtime.

Yes. You can enable geo-replication to automatically copy your backups to up to 3 additional regions. This provides protection against regional disasters and is available as an add-on for €4/TB/month per additional region.

Add the same remote-backups.com storage to both clusters. Backups created from one cluster will be visible and restorable from the other. This makes it easy to migrate VMs or set up disaster recovery across sites.

No per-VM licensing. You can back up as many VMs and containers as you want. The only limit is your storage quota, which you control. Add more storage anytime from the dashboard.

Proxmox VE 7.x and 8.x are fully supported. The PBS storage backend has been stable since PVE 7.0. Older versions may work but are not officially supported.
