Buckets

Object storage with an S3-compatible API, hosted in our German datacenters. Create a bucket, point rclone, restic, or any S3 client at it, and start storing. €6/TB/month, billed hourly.

One Bucket, Many Jobs

Buckets are general-purpose object storage. Use them as a backup target, as application storage, or anywhere you need an S3 endpoint with data residency in Germany.

Backup Target

Point restic, rclone, or any S3-capable backup tool at your bucket. A good fit for database dumps, application exports, and backups from systems that don't speak the PBS protocol.

Application Storage

Store assets, build artifacts, logs, and exports straight from your applications. Every S3 SDK works against the bucket endpoint, so existing code only needs new credentials.

Data Residency

Objects are stored in our datacenters in Frankfurt and Düsseldorf and stay in Germany. That keeps GDPR assessments short and satisfies policies that require data to remain in the country.

How Buckets Work

Every bucket is its own S3 endpoint with dedicated credentials. You create it in the dashboard, we provision it on replicated storage in your chosen region.

1

Create a bucket in the dashboard

Pick a region (Frankfurt or Düsseldorf), a size between 100 GB and 20 TB, a bandwidth limit, and whether to enable autoscaling.

2

Receive endpoint and credentials

Every bucket gets its own endpoint URL, access key, and secret key. The dashboard shows all three with copy buttons.

3

Connect any S3 client

rclone, restic, aws-cli, s3cmd, or any S3 SDK. Set the endpoint and credentials and your tooling works unchanged.

4

Manage it from the dashboard

Browse objects, watch usage and object counts, resize the quota, and rotate credentials whenever you need to.

Objects are stored on replicated storage within your chosen region. Credentials are scoped to a single bucket.

Works With Your Existing Tools

No proprietary client, no agent. Configure the endpoint and credentials and go.

Use it with:
  • rclone and restic
  • aws-cli and s3cmd
  • Any S3 SDK
Each bucket gets:
  • Its own HTTPS endpoint
  • A dedicated access key and secret key
  • Credentials scoped to that bucket only

The dashboard shows your endpoint, access key, and secret key with copy buttons for each field.

$ aws s3 cp backup.tar.gz s3://<bucket>/ \
    --endpoint-url https://fra1.my-s3.com

What You Get Per Bucket

S3-Compatible API

Standard S3 operations over HTTPS. If a tool can talk to S3, it can talk to your bucket. No proprietary client, no agent.

Hosted in Germany

Your objects live on our own hardware in Frankfurt or Düsseldorf and never leave Germany.

Selectable Bandwidth

Choose 100, 250, or 500 Mbit/s per bucket when ordering, and change it later in the bucket settings.

Optional Autoscaling

The bucket grows in 100 GB steps when usage crosses your threshold, and you get an email for every automatic resize. Downscaling can be turned off.

Credential Rotation

Rotate the access key and secret key from the bucket settings whenever you need to, without recreating the bucket.

Object Browser & Metrics

Browse and search your objects directly in the dashboard, next to storage usage and object-count metrics.

Simple, Hourly Pricing

€6 per TB per month*, billed hourly on the provisioned bucket size. Resize up or down at any time, or let autoscaling do it for you.

  • €6* Per TB/Month
    On the provisioned size
  • Billing Interval: Hourly
    No upfront commitment
  • Maximum Bucket Size: 20 TB
Starts at 100 GB, resize at any time

Cost Examples

Provisioned SizeMonthly Cost
100 GB€0.60*
1 TB€6*
5 TB€30*

Prices are net. Billing follows the provisioned size, so with autoscaling enabled the bucket and the bill track what you actually store, in 100 GB steps.

What Buckets Are Not

Knowing the boundaries matters as much as knowing the features.

No Cross-Region Replication

Objects are stored redundantly within the region you pick, but they are not replicated to a second region. If you need a copy elsewhere, create a bucket in the other region and sync between the two with a tool like rclone.

Billed on Provisioned Size, Not Usage

You pay for the quota you allocate, not for the bytes inside. Keep the bucket close to your data with manual resizes, or enable autoscaling and let it track usage in 100 GB steps.

Create Your First Bucket

Buckets are available now for every account with completed billing setup.

  1. Sign in to the dashboard and complete your billing setup if you haven't yet
  2. Go to Buckets > Create Bucket
  3. Choose region, size, bandwidth limit, and whether to enable autoscaling
  4. Click Create Bucket and copy your endpoint, access key, and secret key

Your bucket is ready as soon as the dashboard shows its credentials. Connection details stay available on the bucket page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Anything that speaks the S3 protocol: rclone, restic, aws-cli, s3cmd, and the AWS SDKs. Configure the bucket endpoint with the access key and secret key from the dashboard and the tool works unchanged.

On our own infrastructure in Frankfurt or Düsseldorf, depending on the region you pick at creation. Objects are stored redundantly within that region and do not leave Germany.

€6/TB/month net, metered hourly on the provisioned bucket size. A 500 GB bucket costs €3 per month regardless of how much data it holds. Resizes are reflected in the hourly metering.

When usage crosses your upper threshold (90% by default), the bucket grows by 100 GB automatically and you receive an email. Downscaling works the same way at the lower threshold and can be turned off if you want the bucket to only ever grow.

Yes, from the bucket's settings page. Rotation replaces the access key and secret key; update your applications with the new pair afterwards.

No. Objects are replicated within the region you choose, not across regions. If you need a second copy, create a bucket in the other region and sync with a tool like rclone.

A remote-backups.com account with completed billing setup (address and payment method). After that, buckets are created from the dashboard in a few clicks.

Object Storage Without the Hyperscaler
