Use the Proxmox Backup Client to back up a Linux host to your datastore. This guide follows the official documentation.
On a Debian or Ubuntu host, add the Proxmox APT repository:
wget https://enterprise.proxmox.com/debian/proxmox-release-bookworm.gpg -O /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/proxmox-release-bookworm.gpg
echo "deb http://download.proxmox.com/debian/pbs-client bookworm main" | tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pbs-client.list
Then update the package lists and install the client:
apt-get update
apt-get install -y proxmox-backup-client
After this, the proxmox-backup-client command is available.
This cron job backs up the host every day at 03:00. Open the cron editor with EDITOR=nano crontab -e and add this line:
0 3 * * * PBS_PASSWORD={your_password_here} proxmox-backup-client backup root.pxar:/ --repository {user}@pbs@{fsn1-1.pbs-host.de}:{datastore-id} --exclude /tmp
Run the command once by hand to test it. If the client cannot open some files, exclude them with --exclude.
For all options, see the Proxmox Backup Client documentation.
