Introduction

Beta

A Rescue Mission is your recovery plan for Proxmox VE. It names the VMs and containers to bring back, the snapshot and resources of each one, and the order in which they start. The mission works with the backups that you already keep with us, so there is nothing to install in your guests and no second copy of your data.

Two ways to run a mission

Every mission can run as a restore test or as a failover. Both restore the same guests from the same backups on our recovery platform in Hamburg (ham1). They differ in where the guests end up and how long they stay.

A restore test proves that your plan works. We restore every guest, start it in an isolated network without internet, and check that it comes up. After the test window we delete everything, and you keep a PDF report with the measured recovery time.

Run a test after every larger change to your setup, or let a schedule run it for you.

A failover is for the day your own site is down. We restore the same guests into a copy of your networks, give public guests their public addresses, and give you WireGuard access to everything.

The failover keeps running until you end it. See Start a failover.

From backup to running guests

A run only reads your backups, through a read-only access token that we delete when the run ends. Backups from other regions work too, but the restore then reads across datacenters and takes longer.

To begin, create your first mission and run a restore test. When the test passes, plan the failover network, so that a failover is ready on the day you need it.
