Run a Restore Test

Beta

A restore test brings every guest of a mission back on our recovery platform and starts it in an isolated network. It proves that your backups restore and boot, and it measures how long the recovery takes. The guests have no internet access and cannot reach your network, and your backups do not change.

Start the test

Open a mission with the status Ready and click Run restore test. Choose how long the guests stay up. After this test window we remove everything, and you can always end the test earlier. If the mission has encrypted guests, unlock them first as Encrypted backups describes.

The test freezes the mission when it starts. Latest becomes the newest snapshot at that moment, and later edits to the mission do not change the running test.

The life of a restore test

Watch it come up

The run page shows every guest with its current phase and its restore progress. When the platform is busy, the test waits in a queue first. Guests restore in boot order, and each one starts as soon as its restore is done and its waits have passed.

When a guest runs, Console opens its screen in your browser. Log in there and check that your applications work.

Read the result

For each guest, the test checks that it reaches running, that its IP address is found and that it answers a ping, and the QEMU guest agent when the VM has one. It also checks the published TCP ports of public guests and the waits of your boot order.

When the test has ended, Download report (PDF) gives you the result (Passed, Failed or Cancelled), the measured recovery time and one row per guest with its snapshot, restore time and checks. Keep it as proof for audits.
